Friends,
Our dearest son Alex passed away at 10:30 this morning.
After many complications and surgical interventions, his mother Gilda, his wife Gildita, his mother-in-law Gigi and I spent the night with him, we held him in our arms until he exhaled his last breath.
We are all coming home soon. We’ll let you all know the details of the services as soon as the arrangements are finalized.

Dear Gilda, Fulvio, and Gildita,
We are devastated for you and for the loss of your beloved son. Though we barely knew him, we have followed the news of his service in Iraq closely through Dini and Phil, and worried for him on your behalf. We are all grieving with you and sending wishes for comfort and peace in the months ahead. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
As ever,

Estimados Fulvio y Gilda,

Dear Gilda, Fulvio, and family,
Alex was my first best friend and I couldn't have wished for a better one. I remember coming into your home and being struck by the different tastes and smells. I hope I wasn't to much of a pig when there was flan on the table. I would find Alex in something like a basement or garage surrounded by little green soldiers, Heman action figures, and race cars. Yet, he would always humor me and put these aside for awhile to play my games. I remember negotiations more than arguements but he may have conceded more to me more often because even when he was young he understood the gift of giving. I think we pretended to be unicorns and mermaids much more often than soldiers. Even so, he was always the hero of the scenarios we enacted- albeit one with a fish tail or a horn on his head. He slayed the red bulls and "bad guys" in our imaginations. In the more recent pictures I've seen and the stories I've heard I still see my childhood hero. The difference is that he had stopped pretending. I know he touched and saved many people as a result.
My condolences and love to everyone that knew Alex, especially those that best understand what the world is lacking without him.
Much Love Always,
Erin McCullough

A prayer by Saint Francis :
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred . . . let me sow love
Where there is injury . . . pardon
Where there is doubt . . . faith
Where there is despair . . .hope
Where there is darkness . . . light
Where there is sadness . . .joy
Divine Master,
grant that i may not so much seek
To be consoled . . .as to console
To be understood . . .as to understand,
To be loved . . . as to love
For it is in giving . . .that we receive,
It is in pardoning, that we are pardoned,
It is in dying . . .that we are born to eternal life
St Francis Prayers
Dear Fulvio and Guilda,
You and your beautiful, noble son have been in our family's prayers every day. I know that no polite condolences can console you for such a loss.
Gilda, you have been my son's teacher this year and I cannot tell you how much he reveres and respects you and Alex. You are both true heroes and role models to him and to our family.
Your pictures of Alex leave me wordless. I cry with you as a mother. Thank you for sharing his life with us.
Dear Fulvio,
I wish you God's strength thru these hard times of the passing on of your son. Reading what has been written about him thru this blog, I know he was a very courageous young man. MHSRIP.
I will let everyone at the Bank of Zambia know about the passing on of your son, so that they may grieve with you.
Dear Fulvio and Gilda,
I just heard about Alex now from babbo when he visited Sweden. I`m tearstruck and stifled by the news. Although words can never encompass the way Alex touched the lives of everyone around him, to me he was the only true friend I ever had in the US. I looked up to him so much. He was smart, generous, thoughtful, and had a strong character. At your house we played games like Indiana Jones on the computer, and had "wrestling matches" where he let me win. He really felt like an older brother. I will keep Alex in my heart until the day I can talk to him again and thank him for everything he`s done. I can only offer you my deepest and most absolutely sincere condolences.
~Robert
