Dear Fulvio and Gilda, Alex was my brother and friend and it was my honor to serve with him. Know that we did our best to comfort him after the attack. I am writing the eulogy on him for his memorial service and would love it if you could send some pictures like this for a slidshow of him and palmer. You all have our thoughts and prayers.
To all the family, and to my dear neighbors: Know that your neighborhood is with you, and that many of us have simply cried on our front lawns over the loss of one of our boys. Alex was a magnificent young man, his hopes and dreams reflect our own. We want to give you family time now, but we are out there if you need us. God bless you, God bless beautiful Gildita, God bless the departed soul of Alex - one of our own. Jennifer and Christina, Pete
We first met Alex when you came over for coffee in early 1992 - soon after we moved in across the street. It didn't take long for Olivia to develope a huge crush on Alex. This little girl would stand at our window and watch Alex's comings and goings with his friends, skateboarding and band rehearsals. In the summer of 1993, we got to know Alex when he worked with us on a film project - a three day shoot. He was such a good team player that, after a flood the next spring, we hired him and his buddy, Greg, to remove the soaked insulation from our crawl space. Alex did not like this messy job so much. But, what a great kid, he did it anyway! When Alex returned from a summer working in Italy, he greeted Olivia with a gift. He brought her a little doll from his trip. Olivia's crush continued. As we watched Alex grow, it was no surprise that he became a thoughtful, generous young man with a strong sense of passion and responsibility. He inherited these qualities from his mom and dad who taught him well. Gilda and Fulvio, we too have learned so much from all that you have done and continue to do. Jane and Mike Berardi
Ayca and I (your new neighbors on the corner of Hoover and Garfield) are saddened by your loss. Although we never met Alex we were aware of your concern about his 2nd deployment during conversations at your pizza gathering last fall. You are very warm and kind people who taught your son to be a respectful dedicated man. After seeing the wedding photos and reading about his military service to this country I was speechless. I know this want bring him back but I am proud of your sons courage.
I have come to this blog a dozen times and each time I couldn’t find the words. How can mere words express the horror of this loss for you and Gildita? I have still not found the words but I do thank God for the time he gave Alex to you (were there ever two more proud parents?), for the love and guidance you always provided, and for the joy Alex brought to your lives. He always knew he was loved. It is so right—in this time when nothing else is right—to think of all of you at his side when it was time for him to go.
Alex emriched our lives, especially in those wonderful early years in Houston. In the coming weeks, each of us wants to share a few of our favorite memories with you, but for now, no more words except we love you. We are here if you need anything at anytime. Charlotte, Bill, and Erin
Ninetta bella diritto all'Inferno avrei preferito andarci in Inverno".
I sent an email to family and friends when I heard about Alex’s passing. I thought I’d share some of the responses which I think acknowledge how so many people feel about the sacrifice that Alex made. Please feel free to edit. Dini
This was incredibly sad news to begin the day with today. I've been reflecting on it for much of the morning.
My heart goes out to Alex's widow, his family, and his friends. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Oh my GOD. I am so sorry. May God give you strength. May Alex rest in peace, and may the World come to its senses soon before any more people have to be buried. Please accept my condolences. A.P.
I'm so distressed to hear this terrible news about Alex. I can't stop thinking of Gilda and Fulvio, and little Gilda, too … We'll be back next week and will do anything to help you and your family, and Gilda and Fulvio. All my love, Alex Z.
I am very sorry for your loss. You can take some consolation in the fact that he died doing something he believed in. We can't all say the same. In fact, if you think a stranger's sentiments might offer them some comfort, you can let them know that I really appreciate his sacrifice. I continue to be genuinely heartbroken every time I hear of the loss of another Marine or soldier. Tom
I was saddened this morning by your email and the loss of your friend Alex in Iraq. Thank you for reminding us of those who continue to make sacrifices for our country because of this administration's reckless folly. It makes me angry every time I hear these terrible stories. Perhaps by our collective anger will our citizens finally shed their numbness and make the electoral changes that are necessary to re-direct the course of our future. I am thinking about you and the Carbonaro’s today and wishing you some small measure of comfort during this sad time. Jack
This is truly a tragedy and your email expresses that very beautifully. I am so, so sorry for you all and my heart breaks for Gilda and Fulvio and little Gilda. I am thinking of you all with a heavy heart. Marjorie
We don't know either of you well, even so, we would like for you to know that we have thought of you so often since hearing of the tragic loss of your beloved son. Please accept our sincerest hope that you will be comforted in some way by the sweet sentiments expressed here on this blog and, I'm sure, by so many others who care. May peace find its way into your greiving hearts.
